"These stories blaze like wildfires." - SANDRA CISNEROS

Come Together & Chat
This year's One Book One Community selection, "Sabrina & Corina," mentions a vibrant Latine community displaced and evicted to make room for downtown Denver's Auraria Higher Education Center. Neighborhood connections were lost forever. Families were split. The city barely compensated some residents for the monetary value of what they'd lost, and completely dispossessed others.
San Juan College librarian Jennifer Goodland was formerly an archives assistant at the Auraria Library, and worked with the descendants of this community to prove their eligibility for the displaced persons scholarship mentioned in "Sabrina & Corina." She has extensively researched the passive violence of the West Side redevelopment.
Goodland will be speaking about the efforts to preserve the legacy of the West Side. She is also interested to hear stories of the communities that lie beneath Navajo Lake, and other stories of the human cost of redevelopment.
All members of the College community and the general public are welcome!
